Church of San Giuseppe
The church of San Giuseppe in Varese was founded in 1504 as the oratory of the confraternity of the Beata Concezione e del Gonfalone and reached its present size with the enlargement decided in 1589; the bell tower dates from 1609, the choir and wooden iconostasis from 1611–1617. The interior is entirely decorated with seventeenth-century frescoes and stuccoes: the coffered vault with the musician angels by Giovan Battista del Sole (1658), the presbytery vault with Old Testament scenes by Melchiorre Gherardini, known as il Ceranino (1653), and the stories of Adam and Eve by Antonio Rancati along the nave.
In 2006 RIVA worked on the architectural surfaces and liturgical furnishings of the church, with cleaning, consolidation and reintegration carried out with respect for the decorative layers.
The intervention restored legibility to one of the richest Baroque interiors in the city.
