Pirelli Tower — Milan

Pirelli Tower

The Pirelli Tower, designed by Gio Ponti with Pier Luigi Nervi and Giuseppe Valtolina and built between 1956 and 1960, is 127 metres high with 31 floors and one of the icons of twentieth-century Italian architecture. On 18 April 2002 a small aircraft struck the 26th floor, tearing through two floors and causing three deaths.

The conservative restoration that followed concerned the curtain-wall façades, about ten thousand square metres, with the dismantling of the elements, the cleaning and re-anodising of the aluminium, and the interior spaces. The building reopened with its restored façades on 18 April 2004 and the interiors were completed on 31 May 2005.

Between 2004 and 2005 RIVA took part in the restoration site, applying to modern architecture the same conservative criteria reserved for historic buildings.
