Rotonda della Besana

The Rotonda della Besana was built between 1695 and 1731 as the cemetery of the Ospedale Maggiore, to a design by Francesco Croce, Attilio Arrigoni and Carlo Raffaello Raffagno: at its centre the church of San Michele ai Nuovi Sepolcri, on a Greek-cross plan with an octagonal dome, surrounded by the undulating exposed-brick portico erected between 1719 and 1731. Since 2014 the complex has housed the Children’s Museum of Milan.

In 2013 RIVA carried out the conservative restoration and sanitisation of the loggia, working on the brick surfaces, the plasters of the barrel vaults and the stone elements.

A work that prepared the reopening to the public of one of the most singular places of eighteenth-century Milan.
